Frequently asked questions!

How do I apply?
It’s simple, no forms needed! Just get in touch with us by phone, email, or our quick online form. We’ll arrange a friendly chat about the roles and next steps.

How much time do I need to give?
That’s up to you. Some people volunteer once a week, others once a month, and some just for one-off activities. Whatever time you can give — big or small is always appreciated.

What support and training will I get?
You’ll receive a full induction, including sighted guiding training, plus any role-specific training you need. You’ll also have ongoing support from your Volunteer Manager and team.

What skills do I need?
Most roles don’t need special skills — just kindness, reliability, and a willingness to help. If a role needs anything extra, we’ll provide the training.

Can blind or partially sighted people volunteer?
Absolutely! Many of our volunteers have lived experience of sight loss. We can provide information in large print, braille, audio, or digital formats — just let us know what works for you.

Can under 18s volunteer?
Yes, some roles are open to under-18s, though a few have age restrictions. Contact us to find out which opportunities are right for you.

Will I be paid expenses?
Yes, we reimburse all reasonable expenses so you’re never out of pocket. You’ll just need to provide receipts or tickets and fill in a simple claim form.

Can I volunteer while claiming benefits?
Yes, volunteering does not affect your benefits, as long as you continue to meet the conditions of the benefit you receive.

Can I volunteer if I work full-time?
Yes! Many of our roles are flexible and can fit around your schedule. We also offer micro-volunteering tasks you can do at a time that suits you.

What happens at the induction?
Your induction is a friendly session that covers the practical side of your role, how to support blind and partially sighted people safely and confidently, and a short introduction to different eye conditions. Some roles include extra training such as sighted guiding — but we’ll explain everything step by step.

Can I try a role before committing?
Yes, we want you to feel comfortable. Many volunteers start with a flexible trial period or visit one of our groups first. It’s a chance to see what the role is like before you decide.
